MAIN PURPOSE
To provide proper care, preparation and safety to patients for surgery in the area of pre-operation visit, surgery proper, transfer to recovery room and after surgery care.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Initial assessment of patient
Introduces him/herself to the patient
Checks patient: ensures patient/medical file/operating schedule match
Ensures modesty and a comfortable temperature for the patient
Reassures the patient
Ensuring a pre-operation visit is always carried out. Assisting/ accompanying/ interpreting for the expat anaesthetist in explaining the procedures and risks, and answering questions from the patient and relative/s during the pre-operative assessment and/or before securing consent
Patient care
Induction of anaesthesia, maintaining anaesthesia and patient homeostasis
Ensuring the implementation of MSF protocols and guidelines in the Operating Theatre and Recovery Room
Collaborating with the implementation of MSF protocols and guidelines in the post-operative care and pain assessment of patients in collaboration with the anaesthetist/s, surgeon or gynaecologist
Accompanying the post-operative patient to the High Dependency Unit with the completed patient’s file/operative and anaesthesia records/referral form
Optimize patient condition whenever possible before elective and emergency operations
Systematic application of antibiotherapy and pain protocol
Terminating anaesthesia
Monitoring the patient in the recovery room and/or during the first 24 hours
Assist the nurse in neonatal resuscitation and refer the neonate needing further assistance and monitoring to HDU/ neonatal unit of MCH
Management of materials, consumables, operating theatre
Contributing to proper management of stocks, inventories, materials and consumables, (according to the pre-determined list) and renewing orders
Checking that anaesthetics equipment in the operating theatre functions properly (oxygen concentrator, oxymeter, suction, etc.)
Regular checking of the Anaesthesia Machine and the Oxygen Cylinder and it’s back up
Checking that medical fluid circuits (O2, vacuum, etc.) function properly
Checking cleanliness and disinfection of the operating theatre
Collection and immersion of anaesthetics material to be sterilised
Removal of needles and other sharps into the containers provided
Ensuring the implementation of infection control in the Operating Theatre and Recovery Room
Reporting and Recording
Ensuring information is handed over to the next nursing shift
Keeping the patient’s file up to date
Timely recording of statistical data collected after each operation
Other Responsibilities
Wearing correct work clothing
Taking part in trainings and internal evaluations.
